GLENWOOD -- Dr. Arthur P. Troness, 88, of Glenwood died Wednesday at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The service will be at 11 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Church in Glenwood. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

He was born Aug. 23, 1919, in Sauk Centre to Ole and Minnie (Bryngelson) Troness. He grew up and attended school in Sauk Centre. He graduated in 1940 from Sauk Centre High School. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II. After the fall of the Philippines he was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese and held for 3½ years. After his discharge, he attended St. Cloud State University and the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.

He married Gretchen Mamlock on June 23, 1948, in St. Cloud. They lived in Glenwood where he established his optometry practice. He was an optometrist for 44 years.

He served on the Glenwood School Board for several years and was a member of the Glenwood American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter: Becky (and Jim) Williams of St. Clair; four sons: Tom (and Arlene) of Sauk Rapids, Rick (and Mary Ann) of St. Paul, David of Phoenix and Paul (and Amanda) of Phoenix; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his seven siblings.
