Asmus seeks second term on Willmar City Council

WILLMAR — Julie Asmus, Willmar City Council representative for Ward 2, has announced she is running for re-election. Asmus is currently serving her first term on the council, having been elected in 2016.

"I still have one and only one agenda and that is what is best for Willmar," Asmus said in the news release announcing her decision. "I am proud of my record as a council member. I've worked hard to responsibly manage Willmar's budget, improve our delivery of city services to our citizens and protect our quality of life."

Asmus wants to continue working on flood mitigation issues, economic development and the Invest in Willmar local option sales tax projects.

A retired Willmar police officer, Asmus has lived in Willmar for more than 40 years. She and her husband raised two children.

Asmus is also a veteran of the Army National Guard and is a longtime member of the American Legionin Willmar.

She attended Willmar Community College and St. Cloud State University, majoring in criminal justice. Asmus taught law enforcement classes at Ridgewater College, and has served on many boards and commissions and is the president of Minnesota Business Women.

"As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will have some tough economic decisions ahead of us," Asmus said. "The city is going to need strong leadership and I would like to work with the mayor, the rest of the council and the community to help us get through it and come out stronger in the future."
