Assault leads to two arrests in Meeker County

DARWIN -- An 18-year-old Darwin man and 25-year-old Kimball man were arrested Monday evening after being linked to an assault that may have involved a handgun.

DARWIN -- An 18-year-old Darwin man and 25-year-old Kimball man were arrested Monday evening after being linked to an assault that may have involved a handgun.

Richard Paul Smith, 18, and Jeremy Jay Gonzales, 25, were arrested on charges of terroristic threats and assault, according to a news release from the Meeker County Sheriff's Office.

Smith and Gonzales allegedly assaulted a 28-year-old Zimmerman man at a rural Darwin home along the 22000 block of County Road 14. The release states that Smith and Gonzales fled the scene, driving to Riebe Trucking, where they allegedly threatened a 36-year-old man who rents property where the assault happened.

After leaving Riebe Trucking, the two allegedly drove through a back yard in Darwin before being located by Meeker County sheriff's deputies at 614 N. First St.

Dassel Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance, Litchfield Police and the Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.
