Atwater man dies following crash Thursday in Willmar

WILLMAR — An Atwater man has died following a low-speed rear-end crash around 9:46 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of First Street South and Willmar Avenue, according to Willmar Police Department Captain Michael Anderson.

According to Anderson, after officers were dispatched to the crash, they found that a Chrysler Town and Country had rear-ended a Dodge pickup truck.

The driver of the minivan was identified as Michael Rieke, 63, and medical attention was provided on scene by officers.

Rieke was transported by Carris Ambulance to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Vernon Spieker, 87, of Willmar.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

According to Anderson, preliminary information indicates Rieke may have had a medical emergency leading up to the crash.

All parties were wearing seat belts and no airbags were deployed.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Squad, along with the Willmar Fire Department, assisted in the incident.
