CLARA CITY -- August Martin Koenen, 88, of Clara City died Saturday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Clara City and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born Nov. 6, 1917, in rural Clara City to Harm John and Katherina (Pfetcher) Koenen. He grew up in rural Clara City and attended country school. He served in the United States Army during World War II until 1945. He attended four years of ag school.

He married Alice Wachsman on Dec. 22, 1954, in Clara City. He farmed in the Clara City area and was a horse trainer, showing quarter horses throughout Minnesota.

He was a member of the Amigo Saddle Club, Fifth District Quarter Horse Association, Minnesota Quarter Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.

He is survived by his wife; children: Bruce of Farmington, Brad (and Joanna) of Hutchinson, Bonnie (and Mike) Minor of Dennison and Bob (and Lisa) of Gunnison, Colo.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four siblings: Laura (and Wally) Lottman of Ponsford, Helen (and Gene) Holton of Prescott, Ariz., Pearl Jansen of Bell Flower, Calif., and Marvin (and Doris) Koenen of Clarkfield.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
