MONTEVIDEO -- Unconditional bail was set at $100,000 for the man who is accused of sexually assaulting a juvenile female and who was apprehended after allegedly reporting his crime on a cell phone.
Cheyenne Clay Johnson, 42, of Clara City, is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct for the alleged sexual assault of a girl Tuesday at a residence in Clara City.
District Judge Paul Nelson ordered unconditional bail at $100,000 and at $50,000 with conditions during a hearing late Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson remains in custody in the Chippewa County Jail in Montevideo.
The complaint charges that Johnson called the sheriff's department around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday to report he had committed the alleged sexual assault and that he was now headed on foot along Minnesota Highway 23. A search for him initially was focused in corn fields north of Clara City, but subsequent calls by the defendant led officers to find him in a ditch around 7:30 a.m. along Highway 23 south of Clara City.
