Barn fire kills 1,200 hogs in Renville County

HECTOR – Two barns were destroyed and 1,200 pigs were killed in a fire Tuesday night in Renville County.

The incident was reported at 10 p.m. at a farm owned by Ten Brook Pork, LLP, located about seven miles north of Hector in Brookfield Township.

By the time fire departments from Hector, Buffalo Lake and Cosmos arrived, one barn was fully engulfed in flames and had partially collapsed and another barn had significant interior damage.

Both structures are considered total losses, according to a press release from the Renville County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s estimated that 500 sows and 700 multi-aged hogs died in the fire.

Fire crews were able to protect other adjacent and connected barns.

The cause and origin of the fire is still being investigated, but foul play is not suspected.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office and Buffalo Lake Police Department also responded and assisted at the scene.
