DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – A Bemidji man was in custody after a 10-mile chase Friday night in Becker County in which two deputies fired their weapons.
Ty Justin Andree, 23, was jailed on suspicion of possessing a stolen firearm and faces other charges as a result of the chase, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Around 8:30 p.m. Friday, Becker County sheriff’s deputies identified a vehicle believed to be involved in a Detroit Lakes liquor store theft. They tried to stop the vehicle on County Road 37 near Shell Lake, but the suspect fled. Officers used spike strips on County Road 44 to disable the vehicle just west of Two Inlets.
The suspect then left the vehicle armed with a shotgun and approached a Becker County deputy and a Hubbard County deputy, the release said. Both officers took cover, and the suspect entered a Becker County squad car and drove off. Both deputies fired their weapons at the suspect, and other officers disabled the stolen squad car with spike strips, the release said.
Andree was arrested and taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids, where he was treated for minor injuries.
