BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) - It's Statehood Week celebrating Minnesota's 150th anniversary, and on Monday that means Bemidji is "Capital for a Day."
Five cities in different areas of the state came out ahead in a voting competition late last year. Thief River Falls takes the spotlight Tuesday, followed by Detroit Lakes Wednesday, New Ulm Thursday and Winona on Friday.
Bemidji's festivities Monday include a synchronized community bell ringing and a speech by Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Two distinguished members of the community will serve as honorary governor and lieutenant governor for the day. Brian Ophushas, who is governor Monday, and Robert Fraik, serving as lieutenant governor, both served in the National Guard with tours in Bosnia and Iraq.
