BENSON -- Benson Police are asking for the public's assistance with any information that could help officers solve the Tuesday burglary of the Runnings Fleet and Farm store there.

According to Police Chief Jim Crace, officers were called to the store around 7 a.m. Tuesday. They found that during the overnight hours, someone had thrown a heavy piece of steel through the glass front doors and stolen a safe containing money, checks and chamber of commerce dollars. The thieves also took a heavy-duty flatbed cart.

The safe was "Sentry" brand, model SB-3110. It contained $3,169.30 in cash, $3,612.79 in checks and $275 in chamber dollars.

Officers were able to collect a sample of blood left behind by one of the burglars on a piece of glass from the front door. That sample has been sent to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for DNA analysis.

"If the person who left the blood behind has been convicted of a felony in the past and has been required to provide a DNA sample, the BCA lab may be able to provide us with a match," Crace said.

The piece of steel used to smash the glass was also unique with the words "rock steady" and "Tony Monico" welded onto the steel.
