BENSON -- The Benson School Board on Tuesday approved a revised 2009-2010 budget.

The budget includes $10,839,400 in revenues and $10,818,300 in expenses, leaving a surplus of $21,100.

The original budget, approved last June, included a $278,200 deficit from $10,676,200 in revenues and $10,954,400 in expenses. The budget changed due to contract adjustments and figuring in federal stimulus funding, Superintendent Lee Westrum said. At the time the original budget was approved, the board was not clear on what federal funding would be received and its impact on the budget.

The board also discussed how it will handle the situation if the state withholds aid in the spring, Westrum said. The district could have as much as $1.8 million withheld. District officials are considering how to handle the situation if half that money is withheld until the fiscal year ends June 30.

"We are hopeful we can cash flow," the amount, Westrum said, and if not short-term borrowing of aid anticipation certificates may be used.

The board also reviewed the 2010-11 calendar. Some adjustments appear likely and there will be three days off from school around Easter, but no weeklong spring break.
