MONTEVIDEO -- Betty June Maxwell, 71, of Montevideo died Thursday at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Montevideo. Burial will be at Americus, Kan.

Visitation will be this afternoon and evening, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo.

She was born Jan. 8, 1937, in Alpena, S.D., to Floyd and Winifred (Jeffers) Alley. She moved with her family to Huron, S.D., Nampa, Idaho, and then to McAllen, Texas, where she graduated from high school in 1954. She graduated from Texas Woman's University in Denton in 1958, and moved to Wichita, Kan., to teach school.

She married Calvin Maxwell on Aug. 1, 1959, in Wichita. They moved to Azusa, Calif., where she was a librarian for Aerojet, then to Omaha, Neb., in 1963 and to Grand Island, Neb., in 1965. They moved to Montevideo in 1971. She taught parent education for community education and was a migrant program teacher.

She was active at Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was Christian education coordinator and later was active at United Methodist Church. She was a member of AAUW and the Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband; three children: Larus (and Miriam) Maxwell of Raleigh, N.C., Robin (and Bob) Schrag of Herndon, Va., and Ann (and John) Hallam of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; one brother: Lowell (and Joan) Alley of Franklin, Wis.; and one sister: Joyce Cook of Wichita.

She was preceded in death by one sister.
