WILLMAR - Construction will start this spring on a major improvement at Big Kandiyohi Lake West County Park - a brand-new handicapped-accessible bathhouse.
The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to advertise for bids for the project, estimated at $350,000 to $390,000.
The new structure will replace and upgrade the existing bathhouse used by campers and visitors to the park.
Members of the County Board had a look Tuesday at drawings and floor plans of the new building.
Built of block, it will be situated next to the current bathhouse, with easy access to the road that runs through the park.
Larry Kleindl, county administrator, described it as “a pretty plain, basic building” but said it will contain all the required amenities - sinks, restrooms, showers and changing tables.
It also can double as a shelter during severe weather, he said.
The county will receive bids until March 10. The timetable calls for awarding bids on March 15, after they’ve been reviewed by the architect.
Construction is slated to start sometime in the latter half of April, depending on the weather, and be completed in late summer. The old bathhouse will remain in use until the new one is finished.
