The far northeastern Montana town is about 95 miles west of Williston, N.D., in the Bakken oil region.
Officials say that several BNSF box cars came off the tracks at about 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time, but did not tip over. The boxcars were carrying a few hazardous materials, including liquefied petroleum gas, hydrocarbon and alcohol.
Three to four miles of track were destroyed in the accident.
BNSF sent out a hazmat team to assess the situation and begin cleanup immediately. The Roosevelt County Sheriff's department was on hand to do traffic control throughout Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.
The derailment delayed Amtrak service throughout the night and it's not known when that service will resume.
No one was injured in the accident and no hazardous materials were spilled.
