OLIVIA -- A search for a new superintendent will be getting under way for the BOLD schools.

Superintendent Mike Funk has accepted the position of superintendent of schools in Albert Lea, according to a report in the Albert Lea Tribune. Funk verbally accepted the position in Albert Lea, although the two sides must still negotiate a contract.

BOLD School Board Chairman Paul "Woody" Leindecker said board members learned of Funk's decision on Tuesday and are now beginning to discuss how to proceed with finding a replacement. Board members will have to decide on whether to retain a professional firm to search for a new superintendent, or to conduct their own search.

"He's done a great job,'' said Leindecker of Funk.

School board members are disappointed to see him leave, but not surprised. Leindecker said the members believe Funk is well-qualified to lead a larger district and wish him well in the new endeavor.

Funk has served as the superintendent of the BOLD Schools since April 2005, but took a leave of absence for the 2007-2008 school year. A lieutenant colonel in the Minnesota National Guard, Funk served as the commander of more than 400 Minnesota troops on a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
