Boys Basketball: Free throws propel KMS past BBE, 82-76

KERKHOVEN -- A 10-point advantage in free throws gave Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg an 82-76 non-conference win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in boys basketball action Tuesday.

The Fighting Saints (10-5) made 15-of-23 from the charity stripe, compared to 5-of-13 for the Jaguars (5-9).

KMS' balanced attack also helped in the win, with five players achieving double digits. Jared Johnson led the way with 26 points and Nate Schlagel added 12. Grant Johnson, Jason Fernholz and Sam Kavanagh had 11 each. Fernholz also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Matt McCleary sank six 3-pointers and led BBE with 29 points. Andy Hadley added 17, Spencer Otteson 12 and Darren Braegelman 10.

Central Minnesota Christian (10-3) almost let a six-point halftime lead slip, but Yellow Medicine East (8-6) missed a three-pointer at the final buzzer.

Brian Nelson had 17 points, Shean Gerdes 13, Brian Zimmer 11 and Adam Mikelson 10 to spark the Bluejays. Nelson also grabbed seven rebounds.

Luke Berg had 14 points and Matt Wilson 12 to pace YME. Kenton Johnson hooked seven rebounds.
