Boys Basketball: Montevideo fends off Benson to stay unbeaten in WC South

MONTEVIDEO -- Montevideo held the advantage in free throws and rebounding, which led to the Thunder Hawks' 71-59 win over Benson in West Central South boys basketball action Friday.

MONTEVIDEO -- Montevideo held the advantage in free throws and rebounding, which led to the Thunder Hawks' 71-59 win over Benson in West Central South boys basketball action Friday.

Montevideo (5-0, 8-1) bolted to a 42-26 halftime lead. Benson got as close as seven points in the second half, but the Thunder Hawks' 44-34 advantage in rebounding and 10-point swing in free throws made (20-10) added up to the difference in the game.

Nolan Jaspersen scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Montevideo. Tyler Grey tallied 20 points and Tramel Barnes collected 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Daniel Fragodt paced the Braves (3-2, 8-4) with 20 points. Jesse Holm added 15 points and Eric Lee had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Taylor Witt led three Morris (2-2, 4-5) players in double figures with 16 points. Justin Lund added 13 points and Craig Knochenmus contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.

Nate Curriel scored 16 points to pace the Warriors (0-6, 2-11). Reid Neubauer added 10 points and Craig Gartner had eight boards.

Lac qui Parle Valley 76, Yellow Medicine East 75

With 3.2 seconds showing on the second half clock, Phil Rotunda buried the second of two free throws to break a 75-all logjam that put Lac qui Parle Valley in the lead. Yellow Medicine East failed to get off a shot.

The Stings Casey Luepke had tied the game with two free throws with 30 seconds left but YME never led the second half.

The Eagles were led by Matt Enger with 17 points, Adam Paulson 16 (four 3-pointers), Jasmeson Siegert 14, Caleb DeFrane 11 and Rotuna's nine points and seven rebounds.

Luepke hit for 23 points and Kenton Johnson 21 for the Sting. Dylan Hempel was next with 16. Luepke also nailed 10 rebounds.
