PAYNESVILLE -- The Willmar boys hockey team shutout Fargo Shanley 2-0 Saturday to capture the River Lakes Invitational title.
The Cardinals (4-7) scored both goals in the first period, then rode the lead to the victory.
Rolin Magnuson put Willmar on the board with an unassisted goal at the 9:24 mark, then Joel Schendel padded the lead, scoring at 12:48 with assists going to Josh Mead and Paul Schrupp.
"It was just a good game," said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson. "We controlled the puck."
Ben Leitch turned in a second outstanding performance Saturday, recorded 24 saves for his second consecutive shutout.

Ryan Peterson gave the Stars a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Prairie Centre recorded the next three goals.
Brad Wochnick recorded a goal in the third period to finish the River Lakes scoring.
Stars' goalie Spencer Theis had 37 saves.

Willmar outshot the Stars 28-15 in the game that will count in the Central Lakes Conference standings.

Nate Adams tallied his third goal in the second at the 10:57 mark and Alex Sundlin scored on an unassisted powerplay goal for the final score.
