CLARA CITY -- Buffalo Lake-Hector's solid defense toppled MACCRAY 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 in a meeting of ranked teams Tuesday.

The Mustangs (1-0), ranked No. 5 in the first Class A poll of the season started off strong with a 20-10 lead in the first game, but the Wolverines (0-2), rated 10th in Class AA, came back to within four.

The match played out much the same way in the last two games. BLH would jump out to a good lead, then MACCRAY would scrap back before the Mustangs put it away.

Leah Ashburn led BLH with 11 kills and nine ace blocks. Missy Deal served three aces and Sam Broderius had 22 set assists.

Danielle Goeman paced the Wolverines with 14 kills from the outside. Kari Caspers added nine kills and four ace blocks. Danielle Loomis recorded 20 set assists and Destiny VanDeRiet had eight digs.

Morris Area (1-0) won its season opener with help from the service line, recording 18 aces. Brittany Nelson and Sara Burke led the way with five each.

Nelson also paced the Tigers with five kills. Dani Kloos had seven ace blocks, Burke added 13 set assists and Jessica Nohl had 10 digs.

Kresson Vreeman set the table for Central Minnesota Christian, piling up 27 assists, five digs, four ace serves, three ace blocks and two kills to help the Bluejays win their opener.

Hillary Slagter paced the Bluejays with 12 kills and Beth Bulthuis followed with eight. Slagter also served three aces in 13 errorless attempts and Bulthuis also notched three ace blocks.

Becky Schwitters had a team-high 12 digs for CMCS, which won the consolation title in last year's Class A State Tournament.

Renville County West came up short of winning a second straight season-opening match against Jackson County Central, 3-1.

Last year, the Jaguars (0-1) beat the Huskies to start the season in Renville.
