The Interstate 35W bridge collapse led to widespread complications with cell phone service statewide Wednesday night as phone lines jammed.

Service in the Northland also was affected. Locally, some calls made with Cellular One and Verizon wireless providers could not go through.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar appeared on CNN, asking residents not to call 612 or 651 area codes, which serve the Twin Cities.

"We have 100 percent network activity on land lines and everything is working," said Skip Thurman, a Qwest spokesman. "The challenge is that naturally everyone is concerned for their loved ones, so there is a lot of volume on the cell towers. We are encouraging people to call only if they need to."

A Cellular One spokesman did not return calls Wednesday night.
