GLENWOOD -- Calvin Delbert Smith, 87, of Glenwood died Tuesday at the Glenwood Retirement Village.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Glenwood United Parish Church in Glenwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood.

He was born June 15, 1918, in Glenwood to Charles and Olive (Falkner) Smith. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1936. After high school he delivered the Minneapolis Journal and worked nights at the Standard station. He took the U.S. Postal Service examination and was awarded a position as a postal carrier. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and Australia. He retired as a major.

He married Clarice Gunderson on June 15, 1942. He worked for the Lowry Lumber Company in 1949 and purchased the yard in 1967. He bought the Villard Lumber Company in the mid-1970s and built a new lumber yard in Glenwood in the early 1980s. He retired from the lumber business in 1985.

He was a member of Glenwood Methodist Church (United Parish), the Lowry Lions Club, American Legion, V.F.W., and was a Cub Scout Leader. He served as a clerk on the Lowry School Board for nine years, was on the Lowry City Council, and was voted "Citizen of the Year" in 1989. He also served on the board of directors of the Lowry State Bank and the Glenwood Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife; children: James (and D.J.) of St. Michael, Gerri (and Kim) Selvog of Glenwood, Dan (and Bonnie) of Horace, N.D.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
