VILLARD -- Carl August Carlson Jr., 83, died Wednesday at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Villard United Methodist Church. Burial will be in West Lake Amelia Cemetery.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church. Arrangements are by Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

He was born July 15, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Carl Sr. and Sarai Bida (Johnson) Carlson. He graduated in 1943 from Sioux City Central High School at the age of 17. He lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in France during World War II. He attended Cornell University in New York, Washington State University and the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, eventually earning a master's degree in geology.

He married Jean Eleanor Hesse on Sept. 20, 1953, in Glenwood. He worked for the Soil and Conservation Service in North Dakota as a planning and construction geologist, soil scientist and sedimentationist from 1964 to 1989, and they lived in the Fargo and Bismarck areas. They moved in 1989 to Lake Amelia, where he lived until his death.

He served on the WesMin RC&D Council and the Minnesota River Basin Joint Powers Board; he issued building and zoning permits for Glenwood Township and was on the board of the Glacial Ridge Trail Association.

He is survived by his sons: Jon (and Kathy) Carlson of Moorhead and Eric Carlson of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1996.
