Cash Wise Foods Pharmacy in Willmar has become the latest pharmacy to offer $4 generic prescription drugs to its customers.

The price -- $4 for a month's supply, $7.75 for a 60-day supply and $11.50 for a 90-day supply -- applies to 349 of the most commonly prescribed generic drugs.

The list includes drugs prescribed for allergy, asthma, arthritis and pain, cholesterol, cough and cold, diabetes, ear and eye ailments, gastrointestinal health, heart disease, mental health, skin conditions, thyroid conditions and women's health.

Antibiotics, antifungals, antiviral medications, vitamins and supplements also are included.

The complete list is available at Cash Wise Pharmacy and will soon be posted online at www.cashwise.com .

"This will help customers trying to make ends meet, especially those on fixed incomes," said Ted Beatty, pharmacy operations director for Cash Wise Foods.

At the same time, Wal-Mart announced last week that it will launch the third phase of its $4 prescription program and will begin offering 90-day prescriptions for $10.

The move is expected to particularly benefit customers who have been limited to mail-order prescriptions for a 90-day supply of their medication.

Up to 350 generic medications are available through the program, which also includes Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club stores.

In addition, Wal-Mart is now offering certain women's health medications for $9 for up to a 30-day supply or $24 for a 90-day supply. Included among these drugs are Alendronate, the recently introduced generic version of Fosamax, which is used to treat osteoporosis; tamoxifen, used in treating breast cancer; and drugs used for menopause and hormone deficiency.

A new $4 program has been added as well for more than 1,000 products available over the counter without a prescription.

Generic prescription medications contain the same active ingredients as their brand-name counterparts but cost significantly less. Consumers should ask their doctor if a generic is available for their prescription and is right for them.

Certain drugs are priced higher than $4 in several states, including Minnesota.
