CORRELL -- Chester Charles Carl, Sr., 91, of Correll died Wednesday at Northridge Residence in Ortonville.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church in Appleton. Burial will be at the Appleton City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home-Vaala Chapel in Appleton.
He was born on June 14, 1916, in Hand County, S.D., to Charles and Mary (Snyder) Carl. They moved to the Artichoke Lake area. Soon after, they returned to Rockham, S.D. and later settled on a farmstead near Appleton. At 9 years old, he went to Rockham, S.D., to help his oldest sister and brother-in-law while she was having health problems. He attended school through the eighth grade in a one room country school. In 1937, he came back to Minnesota and went to work hauling staves for Svea Silo Company.

He married Irene Hill in 1938, in Milbank, S.D. They farmed north of Correll. In 1949, they purchased their farm northwest of Correll. He also worked as one of the first purebred Hereford breeders in the area and raised quarter horses.
He was a member of the American Hereford Breeder's Association. He was a member for several years of the Correll School Board, the Correll Rod and Gun Club, and was a Big Stone County Commissioner for nine years. He served for more than 20 years each on the Federated Telephone Board and the Agassiz and Odessa Mutual Mutual Insurance Company. He also served on the Bellingham Shipping, and Akron Township Board. He was a Pioneer seed corn dealer for 20 years. He also was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife; three children: Patricia (and Charles) Korstjens of rural Big Stone City, S.D., Joan (and George) Korstjens of Correll, and Chester (and Cheryl) Carl, Jr., of rural Correll; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandsons; and a sister: Evelyn Nelson of Dawson.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, and four brothers.
