WILLMAR -- The name of the Willmar Area Senior Citizens Center would be changed to Willmar Community Center if the City Council approves a Public Works/Safety Committee recommendation.
The recommendation will be considered by the council during the regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the chambers at the Municipal Utilities Building, 700 Litchfield Ave. S.W.
The name change was suggested this week to the committee by the Willmar Area Senior Citizens Council. LeAnne Freeman, recreation supervisor and Senior Center coordinator, told the committee that the senior club is just one of many entities that use the center.
The senior council recommended the name change to reflect the usage of the building by other entities. The committee discussed the suggestion and voted to recommend the name change.
In other business, the committee recommended the council approve a project estimated at about $26,000 to replace the material used in the biofilter, which the city built in 2003 to reduce odors at the wastewater treatment plant.

The biofilter material has an effective usefulness of about three years. The original material was replaced in 2006. City officials say the newest material, also known as media, will last until the new wastewater treatment plant begins operation in the fall of 2010.
The committee recommended approval of the low price quote from Quam Construction of Willmar to remove, dispose and replace the media, and approved the quote of $17,359 from Central Wood Products of East Bethel for 700 cubic yards of soft wood chips.
The committee was told the city had approved the low price quote from Duininck Bros. of Prinsburg of $15,750 to excavate a storm-water detention pond and install a storm-water control structure on city property near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks and Trott Avenue Southwest.
The project was included in the city's 2008 improvement report and is intended to slow the flow of floodwater caused by heavy rain through the southwest part of the city. Completion date is Nov. 21.
Besides the Public Works Committee report, the council will also receive the Finance Committee report.
Also, the council will take comments from the public during the open forum, make appointments and set goals and objectives for the Storm Water Task Force, consider an on-sale wine liquor license for Northern Grounds, and consider the final plat of Browns Acres.
