WILLMAR -- The Willmar City Council will hold a special session at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at the City Office Building to recount the ballots from the Sept. 9 Second Ward primary election race.
Tim Johnson and Bob Skor were challenging incumbent council member Steve Gardner in the primary election.
The top two vote-getters advance to the Nov. 4 general election.
The City Council met Sept. 11 to canvass the election results and confirmed Johnson received 528 votes, Gardner received 151 votes and Skor received 150 votes.
Under state law, the losing candidate may request a recount if the difference between the vote for that candidate and for a winning candidate for nomination or election is less than one-half of 1 percent of the total votes counted for that office.

City Clerk Kevin Halliday had said the 1-vote difference between Gardner and Skor fell within the range under which state law allows a losing candidate to request a recount. Halliday said the cost of the recount would be paid by the city.
The recount was requested in writing Monday afternoon by Skor. The deadline for filing such a request would have been 4:30 p.m. today, according to Halliday.
