BIRD ISLAND -- Clarine S. Westphal, 71, of Stewart and Buffalo Lake, formerly of Bird Island, died Monday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. Burial will be at Preston Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hughes Funeral Home in Hector, with a prayer service at 5 p.m., and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to International Diabetes Center.
She was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Bird Island to Laurence and Doris (Theis) Gass. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1952 and attended Mankato State College. She worked at the First National Bank of Minneapolis. She was employed by agencies in the Cosmos, Bird Island, Lake Lillian, and Olivia areas.

She married Ervin Westphal on Oct. 30, 1981, in Bird Island. They lived east of Buffalo Lake in Preston Lake Township. They worked together in Ervin's DeKalb seed business.
She was a member of St. Mary's C.C.W. and St. Mary's Choir, the American Legion, and Preston Lake Extension Women's Group.
She is survived by her husband; children: Mark (and Judy) Klemp of Buffalo Lake, Nancy (and Greg) Muench of Atwater, Robyn (and Donald) Scott of Cosmos; six grandchildren; and siblings: Marie (and Robert) Zurn of Olivia, Karen (and John) Kuemper of Bird Island, and Laurence (and Gen) Gass Jr. of Bird Island.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Marion Jean; and one sister.
