WILLMAR -- A conditional use permit was approved Monday for the Living Word Lutheran Church to build a new sanctuary in New London Township.

The church has been housed at the Prairie Meadows Learning Center in Spicer since 2005.

The new church will be built off Kandiyohi County Highway 9, near the New London town hall.

No one spoke for or against the permit at the Kandiyohi County Planning Commission meeting and no one from the church was present to discuss construction plans.

A preliminary map provided to the zoning office indicates the sanctuary will seat 225 people.

The only condition that was attached to the permit is that an easement for a 60-foot right-of-way be obtained on County Road 9.

"This is a straight-forward request," said Zoning Administrator Gary Geer. "They're going through all the right steps."

Commissioner Harlan Madsen said because more than one acre of soil would be disturbed during the construction, the church would have to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit to address storm water concerns.

The Planning Commission also approved a conditional use permit for Jerry and Tracy Bjork to operate a home extended business at their residence in Irving Township. The couple intend to make wood products, such as cabinets, hutches and entertainment centers.

The Kandiyohi County Commissioners will take final action on the permits at their meeting Tuesday.
