WILLMAR — Travelers using Kandiyohi County Road 5 in Willmar between U.S. Highway 12 and Willmar Avenue will no longer have to take the detour.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it will be opening the stretch of road on Wednesday, Nov. 13, as construction has been completed on the roundabout.

The project is part of the overall Willmar Rail Connector and Industrial Access Project, or the Willmar Wye. The new single-lane roundabout will eventually be at the intersection of County Road 5 and the realigned Highway 12.

The roundabout will be connected to the new Highway 12 in 2020, according to the news release from MnDOT.

Remaining in place is the detour of state Highway 40.

While road grading operations are winding down for the winter, crews will continue work on the new bridges that will go over the new railroad track. The bridges will be located on Highway 40 and the new Highway 12.

Highway 40 is scheduled to reopen in summer 2020.
