BENSON -- Benson Police Chief Jim Crace announced Thursday he intends to run for Swift County Sheriff.

Two other individuals, Chief Deputy John Holtz and former Benson Police Sgt. Bob Borden, are also expected to run for the seat. Sheriff Scott Mattison retires next week.

A lifelong law enforcement officer, Crace has been Benson's police chief for the last 10 years. He recently retired from the National Guard, after serving for 20 years including several international deployments.

He's participated in numerous leadership and skills training sessions, including K-9 handling and dive and rescue training, has received military awards and medals and has been instrumental in securing federal grants for Benson's "safe school" program and crisis intervention team training for law enforcement officers.

In a news release Crace said he "possesses the experience, professionalism and strong leadership qualities necessary for this position." He said his law enforcement and leadership experience, extensive training, service history and record of progressive action will help "move the Swift County Sheriff's Department forward."
