WADENA -- The Montevideo boys are headed back to the Class A state meet in cross country for the first time since 2001 while the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls team, led by individual champion Nikki Swenson, is returning for a second straight year as a result of Section 6A meet victories Thursday.
Jacob Henderson of Yellow Medicine East claimed the boys title. He was fifth a year ago in this race.
Tony Klosterboer in sixth and J.J. Nieuwbeerta in eighth place led the Thunder Hawks to 83 points in a tight three-way finish. Defending champion Staples-Motley and Sauk Centre each finished with 88 points with the Cardinals getting the nod on the tiebreaking sixth runner.
Swenson, the 2003 state champion and runner-up each of the past two years at Northfield, ran a 14:35. First-place Staples-Motley had the next three finishers led by Naomi Landecker at 15:08.
Henderson clocked 16:51, seven seconds up on eighth-grader Ryan Swenson of LQPV/DB. Austin Hinrichs of MACCRAY took third in 17:05.
