ST. CLOUD -- True to its No. 1 preseason ranking, the Willmar boys crushed the competition at the 11-team St. Cloud Apollo Invitational to open the season.
Kaafi Adeys, Abdi Awale and Mike Switzer ran 1-2-3 followed by Mustafa Yusuf in sixth and Dustin Geselius in eighth. The 20 points is only five more than the minimum. Wayzata was second with 60 points.
The Willmar girls placed sixth led by sophomore Britta Pederson (14th) and eighth graders Jayne Cole (26th) and Danielle Erickson (37th).
Coach Disa Daucsavage noted that the times were faster than five days earlier when the Central Lakes Conference Jamboree was held on the same Greystone trail system.
