MOORHEAD -- The Willmar boys place third and the Cardinal girls were fourth at Moorhead's Shocky Strand Invitational on Monday morning.
The Spuds won both the boys and girls varsity races.
The Willmar boys were led by junior Matt Weitzel who finished ninth overall in 17:55 on the flat 5,000-meter course at Johnson Park. The Cardinal girls were led by junior Jayne Cole, also ninth, in a time of 16:19 in the 4,000-meter race.
The 2007 Class A runner-up to Paynesville's Linda Keller, Naomi Leindecker of Staples-Motley, won the girls event in 15:08. The boys champion was Jacob Lindaas of Moorhead in 16:12. The Spuds, who finished seventh in the state meet, one place behind Willmar last fall, totaled just 18 points, three short of a perfect score.
Willmar's top male runner, Mahad Hassan, missed the meet due to an illness.
