MELROSE – The bodies of two recently killed dogs and skeletal remains of two more dogs and a cat that were found late last month in a wildlife area are being investigated by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident was reported Saturday in the Lovell Lake Wildlife Protection Area, located northeast of Melrose.
According to a news release, an individual looking for a hunting spot discovered the bodies of two black lab dogs that had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and had been discarded in a ditch along Lovell Lake Road.
The male dog appeared to be older, all black with a white patch on his chest and the female was a fully-grown all-black adult. Neither dog had a collar but both appeared to have been well fed, according to the sheriff’s office, who estimated the animals were left there between 12-2 p.m on Saturday.
Upon further investigation, the skeletal remains of two other dogs and a cat were also located in the same area.
