WILLMAR — A detour for state Highway 40 west of Willmar goes into effect Monday.

It’s expected to remain in place through June 2020, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The work zone is in an area between the intersections of Kandiyohi County Road 5 and County Road 116.

Highway 40 traffic will be routed on Kandiyohi County Road 7 and U.S. Highway 12 as the detour route.

The Kandiyohi County Road 55 crossing of Highway 40 also will be closed as the work zone includes a portion of County Road 55 just north and south of Highway 40.

The detour is needed for the Willmar Wye project. The overall project includes the realignment of U.S. Highway 12 and the reconstruction of Highway 40, including two new bridges. The project also includes the construction of two single-lane roundabouts along the new route of Highway 12.

Benefits of the project include improved safety by reducing at-grade crossing, reduced wait times for railroad crossings to clear, increased multi-modal opportunities for shippers, and fewer trains and reduced noise in downtown Willmar.

The Hoffman Team is the contractor on the project. Major participants of the team include Hoffman Construction Company, Lunda Construction Company, and Bolton & Menk Inc.
