Daniel Miguel Villarreal, 32, of Willmar, made his first appearance Monday on a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation.

Unconditional bail was set at $10,000. Conditional release was allowed on his personal recognizance, provided he have no contact with the woman or her residence. His next court date is Jan. 26.

Villarreal is also charged with misdemeanor counts of domestic assault, fifth-degree assault and damage to property.

According to the complaint, a Willmar police officer was called around 6:15 p.m. Sunday to a home along the 1400 block of Lakeland Drive Northeast. A woman reported she was pushed and choked multiple times by Villarreal, whom she said had been drinking. The officer observed abrasions and bruising on the woman and glass from a smashed table in the home.
