Maira Alejandra Fernandez, 20, of Willmar was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty last month to a felony charge of controlled substance crime in the fifth degree and a misdemeanor charge of driving after suspension.

Five other charges, including two misdemeanors and three petty misdemeanors, were dismissed.

According to the complaint filed against her, Fernandez was stopped by police March 5 following a minor traffic violation. Officers who responded found drug paraphernalia, a baggie with two grams of marijuana and a baggie with .075 grams of methamphetamine in her vehicle.

On the felony drug charge, Judge Donald Spilseth sentenced Fernandez to 60 days in jail, with credit given for the 33 days she has already served, ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and placed on five years probation.

She is also required to complete a chemical dependency evaluation, submit to random drug testing, provide proof that her vehicles are legal to drive and commit no felonies. If she complies with the conditions during the five-year probation period, the felony will be reduced to a misdemeanor.

The sentence for driving after suspension includes a 90 day jail sentence, with 60 days stayed and a $500 fine with $400 stayed. She was placed on probation for one year.

The two sentences will run concurrently.
