NEW LONDON -- The New London Fire Department was called to a house fire around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday at 1683 240th Ave. N.W.
The department requested the use of a tanker from the Belgrade Fire Department, but the New London Fire Department extinguished the fire before Belgrade's arrival, said New London Fire Chief Sigurd Holme. The New London Fire Department cleared the house at 4:44 a.m.
One female at the residence was also transported to Paynesville Area Hospital for smoke inhalation, Holme said, but she was later released.
According to Holme, the residence had no active smoke alarm and the female's dog woke up its owner after sensing smoke.
"The dog saved her life," Holme said. "The dog was the hero."
