NEW LONDON -- Douglas Clyde Grund, 84, of New London died May 1 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. A private burial will be held after the service.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Peace Lutheran Church, Rice Hospice, or Prairie Wood Environmental Learning Center.

He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Boise, Idaho, to John and Marie (Siggerud) Grund. They moved to Van Buren, Ark., and Coffeyville, Kan. Then they moved to northern Minnesota where he attended and graduated from Virginia High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 45th Infantry "Thunderbird" Division in France. He returned to Minnesota and attended St. Cloud State University, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree and master of science degree.

He married Genell Bagne on Aug. 4, 1951, in Glenwood. They lived in New London where he was a teacher and guidance counselor in New London Schools for 36 years.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a past member of the church council.

He is survived by his wife; children: Michael Grund of Lakeville, Jennifer (and Daniel) Carrigan of Concord, Calif., and David (and Janet) Grund of Altus, Okla.; six grandchildren; a brother: Edmund (and Dolly) Grund of West St. Paul.

He was preceded in death by his son: James; and an infant daughter: Susan.
