COTTONWOOD -- Joseph Davis, 24, of Olivia, was killed in a one-vehicle accident on state Highway 23 early Friday morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Davis was killed shortly after 3 a.m. when his 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT struck a power pole two miles north of Cottonwood at the intersection of Yellow Medicine County Road 2 and the highway, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The report did not list whether Davis was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The collision caused power service to be interrupted to customers served by four Minnesota Valley Cooperative Light and Power Association substations, according to John Williamson, manager of electric and engineering operations manager for the power cooperative. He said the area serves slightly less than one-fourth of the cooperative's 5,500 customers.

About one-half of the affected area had power restored in about one hour's time. The remainder of the area was without power for about three hours. By 9:40 a.m. a new pole had been erected and normal service restored throughout the area, he said.
