Editorial: Defib goal in county could be a lifesaver

Kandiyohi County volunteers have formed a coalition seeking to install automated external defibrillators in every business and public place within the county.

Kandiyohi County volunteers have formed a coalition seeking to install automated external defibrillators in every business and public place within the county.

It is a worthwhile effort that could possibly save the life of you or your loved one.

A defibrillator provides an electric shock to restore a heart's normal rhythm.

The Kandiyohi County defibrillator coalition believes the automated external defibrillator is a critical first step in surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. They are right.

When an individual suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, their odds of survival increase significantly -- 50 percent or better -- when a defibrillator is applied within the first three minutes.

The coalition has a good start. In the past year, they have helped purchase and install 32 defibrillators for local businesses and churches in the county.

The group is also working on training the public on how to use the defibrillators.

The defibrillator coalition's efforts are a worthy cause.
