The Minnesota State High School League took the right steps to protect all competitors' health and tournament eligibility.

This Minnesota high school sports tradition has persevered through the eight-day wrestling shutdown ordered Jan. 30 by the league.

This perseverance is characteristic of the individual competitors and coaches of this wonderful Minnesota sport. If you want to see some of the best individual performances, as well as absolute teamwork, we encourage you to attend a local high school wrestling match in your community.

Herpes simplex type-1 is the same virus that causes cold sores. This should not be confused with herpes simplex type-2, which is transmitted through sexual contact.

We should not stigmatize wrestlers or this sport by not fully understanding this virus and how it spreads.

Wrestling programs throughout west central Minnesota work on a daily basis -- by washing mats and regular skin inspections -- to combat this viruses and control any infectious outbreaks.

This sport is one of the most competitive and demanding in high school athletics. It is a sport with exceptional and talented athletes.

To the high school wrestlers and their coaches, good luck as your completes the regular season and tournament competition.
