House District 13A voters have a choice -- for the third time -- between DFL challenger Bruce Shuck and GOP incumbent Bud Heidgerken. This is a choice between county government, agriculture and business experience versus legislative, education and business experience.
Shuck, who grew up on a Sunburg farm, now works for a Glenwood business. A former Kandiyohi County Commissioner, he is a passionate Democrat who loves to work for the "little guy." He is doing a better job this election of focusing on the critical issues.
A retired teacher and businessman from Freeport, Heidgerken is an independent legislator not afraid to buck his caucus. He is an outgoing legislator who knows how to press the flesh. His main accomplishment was an increase in nursing home reimbursement rates for Stearns, Sherburne and Benton counties.
This race is a close call as it was in 2004. Heidgerken's two-term seniority is now a factor. He may face his own decision if the DFL wins a House majority.
The West Central Tribune endorses the re-election of Heidgerken for House District 13A.
