Kandiyohi County has started its transition period from longtime County Administrator Wayne Thompson to future County Administrator Larry Kleindl.

It will be an important transition as Thompson completes his 29-year career as county administrator on June 30.

Kleindl has performed well in his position as director of the Family Services Department, which includes managing 100 employees and a $13 million budget.

He will be pulling double duty -- heading the Family Services Department and learning his future county administrator role -- through early March when a new family services director is expected to be hired.

In early 2007, Kleindl will move into the county administrator's office and take an increasing role in the administrative duties.

The county's plan to have Kleindl work together with Thompson, starting this month, provided a good opportunity to work together through June. The move also is beneficial for Kandiyohi County as Thompson can help finalize the transition of reimbursements and lease payments for county buildings on the Willmar Regional Treatment Center campus.

As Kleindl begins his transition to county administrator, we wish him well in his new and challenging role.
