GLENWOOD -- Edward Butala, 80, of Detroit Lakes, formerly of Glenwood, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of the Sacred Heart in Glenwood.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

He was born April 18, 1925, in Richmond to Michael and Ann (Moser) Butala. He grew up and graduated from high school in Amherst, S.D. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1947.

He married Frieda Spitzer on Jan. 28, 1948, in Cayuga, N.D. They lived in a Havana, N.D., Browns Valley, Benson and Glenwood. He was an agent for Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years.

He was a member of the Burlington Northern Retired Veterans Association and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife; sons: Richard (and Marilyn) of Detroit Lakes, Michael (and Lois) of St. Paul, Curtis (and Lola) of Lakeville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two siblings: Florence Juneaman and Richard Butala.

He was preceded in death by one sister.
