APPLETON -- Edwin Fred 'Shorty' Kohlman, 91, of Appleton died Saturday at Appleton Area Health Services.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the lower level of the Appleton Nursing Home. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Shible Township.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the nursing home. Arrangements are by Zniewski Funeral Home-Vaala Chapel in Appleton.
He was born on July 4, 1916, in Shible Township, Swift County, to Henry and Martha (Haven) Kohlman. He attended school in rural District 35 through the eighth grade and worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater.
He returned to the family farm and farmed until 1965. Then he joined a combining crew that traveled from Oklahoma into Canada combining wheat. After several seasons, he developed hearing problems and was forced to retire from the crew. In 1970, he was made troubleshooter for the Harvestor Silo Company based in Waconia. He retired in 1981. He moved to Hoffman and helped the local farmers with field work. In 1998 he purchased a house in Holloway, where he helped neighbors with garden tiling, lawn mowing, and snow removal. In November, he was admitted to the VA Hospital where he was diagnosed with cancer. He was transferred to Appleton Area Health Services.

He is survived by his sister: Fern Paulson of Alexandra and sister-in-law: Eileen Kohlman of Appleton.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
