WILLMAR -- The Minnesota Department of Commerce recently announced the state will receive $73 million in energy assistance for low-income Minnesotans that cannot afford heating costs over the winter months. The Minnesota Energy Assistance Program will administer the program for Minnesota residents that are eligible.
Sen. Gary Kubly, DFL-Granite Falls, encourages residents to apply for funding if they may have difficulty affording heating costs. He stated, "The EAP is a key program to help low-income families, seniors, and the disabled afford high heating costs and stay in their homes during these difficult economic times. I hope to get the word out to everyone that may be eligible in our district."
While $73 million from the federal government is less than what Minnesota has received in previous years, there is a possibility that additional funds will be provided depending on the severity of the winter. Customers with 50 percent or less of the state median income -- $43,050 for a family of four -- may qualify.
Those who qualify must apply for assistance with the local service provider in their area.
