NEW LONDON -- The New London-Spicer School Board announced Monday that 1,574 students are enrolled in the district, based on attendance from Sept. 4.

"These are unofficial and they will be deleted on Oct. 1," Superintendent Paul Carlson said about the tallied figures.

Based on the unofficial enrollment figures produced for Monday's regular meeting, the biggest class in the district is the junior class with 150 students. The figures also showed that the class size ratio in each grade ranged between 20 and 28 students per section.

Carlson said the district would retake attendance to depict monthly enrollment on Oct. 1 and would continue to do so each month. He said these figures were simply accumulated to inform the school board members.

According to the district's enrollment study, last year's enrollment on Oct. 1 was 1,585 students and on June 1 the total was 1,563 students.

Adding to the enrollment numbers, the principals of the high, middle, and elementary schools collectively told the New London-Spicer area to keep a look out for students as they attempt to raise funds for numerous programs throughout the year.

According to the plans for the 2007-08 school year, those looking to stock up on cookie dough, for example, need only to locate their nearest freshman student. Other popular fundraising ideas were car washes, and selling steaks, chicken and frozen pizzas.

Based on the lists approved by the school board, New London-Spicer residents can expect up to an excess of up to 25 groups of students knocking on their doors.

Others news from Monday's meeting:

- Athletic director John Vraa announced that New London-Spicer Homecoming begins next week.

- Business manager Barb Gjerde reported the purchase of the district's new pickup. After purchase of the truck, registration and motor vehicle tabs, the pickup cost the district $14,200. Gjerde also announced that the proposed levy for 2008 was expected to increase only 1 percent.
