COSMOS -- Everett Vaine Brooks, 88, formerly of Cosmos, died Sunday at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. Burial will be at the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Cosmos American Legion Post 126.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service Thursday at the church. Arrangements with Hughes Funeral Home of Hector.

He was born May 15, 1919, in Stratford, Iowa, to Byron and Dessa (Wepel) Brooks. He grew up southeast of Cosmos where he attended District 80 School. He graduated in 1939 from the Litchfield High School. Then he worked at Lockheed Aircraft in California. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was stationed in England with the Eighth Air Force. He flew 30 missions as a B-17 gunner and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He traveled to Greenland to work in construction. He returned to the United States and farmed near Hutchinson.

He married Jeanette Van Epps on July 2, 1959. They moved and he worked at Gopher Motor Rebuilding in Minneapolis. He retired and moved to Cosmos. He lived in Dassel and then he lived at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield.

He was a member of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society and the American Air Museum in Britain. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. He was a member of the Beack-Thompson American Legion Post 126 in Cosmos, and had been a member of the VFW of St. Louis Park Post No. 5632.

He is survived by his sister: Velma (and Glenn) Pregler of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.
