Trends in binge drinking and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs and methamphetamine will be explored at a community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services Building.

The event will help launch a new countywide effort to reduce alcohol and drug abuse by youths.

It is sponsored by the Kandiyohi County Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Coalition and the Region 5 Prevention Center. The guest speaker is Jay Jaffee, chemical health coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Health. Jaffee has a background in promoting and developing alcohol and drug prevention efforts in schools, community settings and for the state of Minnesota.

In his presentation, he will explore trends and myths about binge drinking, prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse and methamphetamine use. He also will review current research on strategies that work -- and don't work -- for preventing alcohol and drug abuse among young people.

The event is free and open to the public.
